One of the first, mainly independent, user research projects I completed was the examination of library user’s interactions with and usage of music. Specifically, my task was to look at how users would feel about having music playing in some areas of the library, with aims to improve the study experience. To achieve this, I decided to create an interactive graffiti board that allowed users to record their views and feedback. I wanted to create a graffiti board that would cover the full range of implications and considerations that would go into implementing such an initiative in the library. Therefore, I made sure to cover topics and include prompts such as suggested genres, volume, specific areas of the library and whether it was a good or bad idea. This was to ensure that users took into consideration, the full scale of, what the library UX Group was proposing and aid in synthesising the best possible insights.
Another consideration I had when creating the interactive graffiti board was the period in which I had to conduct the research. This research project took place when library footfall was abnormally low due to both industrial action and fears around being in public spaces due to the beginnings of a global pandemic. Due to this, I had to create a graffiti board that was highly visually engaging to get as much user engagement as possible. By doing this, I was able to produce an interactive user activity that produced over 45 responses in less than 6 hours. The feedback from users was focused and engaging, which assisted in synthesising the findings. I was able to produce a shared document that illustrated the individual responses from users. Plus I gave strong recommendations that the introduction of music in the library was not a favourable idea.
In synthesising these findings, I discovered the potential accessibility issues that such an initiative could introduce. For example, one of the responses on the graffiti board stated “NO! Students [with] ADHD? Other learning diffs?” This response brought further awareness of the importance of acknowledging and accommodating the user needs of those with accessibility needs and those who require further consideration when using certain products and services. As it often, these individuals that are most likely to use a more expansive range of your services and products, in more varying ways, than others. Due to this consideration, I was able to feedback to the UX Group actionable insights that covered the impact on all user issues and needs in a clear and informative manner. In this particular project, the marriage between books and music was not well suited and would likely decrease the user experience rather than enhance it.
